Politics of Lingerie in the Gaza Strip Lingerie Free Strip Causes UpsetLingerie is not something that usually causes people to get their knickers in a twist (excuse the pun). It is true that finding lingerie that fits perfectly is important for every woman’s comfort and admittedly this can sometimes be a bit of a struggle, but for the most part lingerie is fun, feminine and something to be enjoyed.

In the Gaza Strip, however, lingerie has recently become a point of political contention, as the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas (who control the area) have introduced new laws banning the public display of lingerie and scantily clad mannequins in all shops.

The BBC reports that according to Hamas these measures have been put in place to protect public morality and according to a police spokesman, these new laws are the result of pressure and complaints from many Gaza residents.

This new law banning the public display of lingerie – including sleepwear and pyjamas –is the latest in a number of laws that have been introduced which many claim are restricting women’s freedoms and segregating the sexes.

In Gaza, women are also forbidden from riding motorcycles or attending wedding parties after midnight and earlier this month the Hamas even attempted to ban them from smoking the popular water pipes.
