M&S Advert Sparks Sexist Row
The ASA are considering investigation after Philip Glenister’s role in the latest Marks & Spencer advert has attracted complaints.
The campaign, reported to cost £10m, features a host of stars including Stephen Fry, Myleene Klass and Twiggy discussing what they couldn’t do without over Christmas.
Philip Glenister is seen saying at the end of the advert, in a Gene Hunt-esque style, “That girl prancing around in her underwear“. The ad ends with M&S’s regular lingerie model, Noemie Lenoir, doing twirls in a winter forest whilst dressed in lingerie taken from the M&S Autograph range.
The Advertising Standards Authority have now received eight complaints, that the Life On Mars characters comments were offensive and demeaning to women.
The watchdog are to assess the complaints before deciding whether or not to launch an investigation.

This is absolute madness! 8 complaints and an investigation is launched?
The statement is in keeping with the Life On Mars character, and as M&S have always had scantily clad women in underwear, there is no difference to any other years advert.
Whatever the outcome, the news and free publicity won’t do M&S any harm.
