In the run up to the World Cup there were many television documentaries that informed viewers as to the extreme levels of poverty, hunger and deprivation suffered by the people of Africa.
As with most coverage of this kind, many of the programmes and documentaries filmed in Africa focussed on the well-known, widespread problems, but it is important to remember that amongst such poverty, items that we would consider necessary are often absent from people’s lives.
Believe it or not, one of these things is underwear, as in many parts of the continent underwear is considered an expensive luxury rather than a necessity. This means that many people end up buying used underwear or having none at all.
Knickers 4 Africa is a charity that aims to provide new briefs and clean bras and vests to men, women and children who would otherwise not have access to these items. Although it may seem insignificant to many of us, clean underwear makes daily life more comfortable and dignified.
